Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society
Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society -- Kalamazoo, MI

Welcome to the KVGS website!

We serve historians and genealogists who are interested in the Kalamazoo River Valley region - and around the world, too.  Join us!

Welcome All!

We look forward to seeing you on Monday, September 16, at 7:00 pm as we kick off our fall programming with our September general meeting.

Immediately following the business meeting, Matthew Pacer, Reference Librarian at the Library of Michigan, will present Collections of the Library of Michigan. Learn more about your state library's physical/digital collections and the variety of services available for historical organizations and researchers throughout our great state. Matt will make his presentation in person at Portage District Library.

Matt Pacer is a Reference Librarian, Donation Coordinator, and coordinator of the Michigan Rare Collections for the Library of Michigan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Wright State University, a Master of Arts in Military History from Kansas State University, and a Master of Librarian and Information Science from Wayne State University.

This event is hybrid (Portage District Library, 300 Library Lane, Portage, MI, and on Zoom). Socializing and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm at the library. KVGS members will receive a meeting reminder with a Zoom registration link a few days before the meeting. You can also register on Zoom through the EVENTS page on our website.

Beginning September 19, KVGS has something new: monthly Genealogy Help sessions following our Monday general meetings on Thursdays. Need help with a genealogy research problem? Wondering what to do next in your family history search? Bring your questions to discuss with KVGS volunteers at the Portage District Library Heritage Room from 10 am to 12 pm. Just drop in and see what another point of view can do to help solve your problem.

See the EVENTS page to learn about other exciting activities scheduled before September 16 and later this fall: the 2024 Kalamazoo Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Kindenberger Park on September 7; a research trip to Washington D.C. from September 8 to 14; the Canadiana Festival at Kalamazoo's Arcadia Festival site on September 21; and a research trip to the Michigan History Center in Lansing on October 26.

Suppose you missed an earlier program, such as Artist and Educator Bobbi Mathis's excellent June presentation on Memorials Cleaning & Restoration or one of our Skills Sessions. You will find program recordings and handouts from many programs under our website's MEMBERS section and then in the RECORDINGS/HANDOUTS section. Please remember to sign in as a member first.

We are eagerly looking forward to seeing you on September 16!
